A Jihad for Love

While in San Francisco I saw a film called A Jihad for Love. It’s a powerful and moving documentary featuring lesbian and gay Muslims from several Islamic countries including Egypt, Turkey, India, and Iran. I was touched by their courage, their clear thinking and their awareness of the love of Allah. These were devout Muslims – people who had tried to change their sexuality in line with the conventional teachings of Islam but who could not deny who they were and who finally had to accept that Allah had created them gay. They told horrendous tales of suffering – imprisonment in Egypt, lashing in Iran, ostracism and exile.

“Produced by Parvez Sharma and Sandi DuBowski, A Jihad for Love was filmed over 5 years in 12 countries and 9 languages and comes from the heart of Islam. Looking beyond a hostile and war-torn present, it reclaims the Islamic concept of a greater Jihad, whose true meaning is akin to ‘an inner struggle’ or ‘to strive in the path of God.’ In doing so the film and its remarkable subjects move beyond the narrow concept of ‘Jihad’ as holy war. http://www.ajihadforlove.com” (From the press release)

Well worth seeing.
